Introduction
Introducing Letterland
Letterland is an imaginary place where each letter is a character built around its shape (a pictogram), with a name that uses the sound the letter makes (alliteration) – two important pieces of the puzzle needed in order to learn to read.
Since, except for the long vowels, the common name of each letter has nothing to do with the sound the letter makes in words, Letterland gives each letter a new name using alliteration that emphasizes the sound the letter makes in words.
Creating pictograms with each letter is a memory aid to help children remember the shape to go along with the sound. The act of tracing a letter not only aids the memory but set the stage for writing the letter. Some Letterland products have felt letters to improve the tactile feedback. Read more about Letter Shapes
